Chitina is the ideal overnight point before you begin your journey into the nation’s largest national park. Our local lakes and streams feature fantastic Rainbow Trout and Grayling fishing as well as spectacular hiking and photographic opportunities. The Copper River, just out our back door, is world renowned for its summer run of red salmon. If we happen to be smoking fish during your visit be sure to ask Michael for a taste, friends come from miles around for his secret recipe.
Wildlife, the two and four-legged variety is always abound. We are happy to show you around our little ghost town. The area around the current town site of Chitina was originally home to many Native Athabascan (Indian) summer fish camps and a winter gathering area prior to the 1900’s. Chitina the town site became a boom town during the day of the Kennecott Copper Mine and the Copper River Northwestern Railway construction and operation in the early 1900’s to the late 1930’s. The influence of these businesses in the first part of the 20th century is still very evident today. Chitina’s current population ranges from 60 in the winter to 100 or so in the summer. There are two small convenience stores, one gas station, two gift stores, a post office, bar, fire hall, native village site, and a seasonal restaurant with limited hours in the summer. The restaurant operates only a few hours per day in Chitina so if you are arriving late in the day, we recommend stopping earlier in Glennallen or Kenny Lake to eat. We also recommended always carrying a stash of trail food and liquids on the road in Alaska, just in case.
