One of the amazing parts of living along the banks of the Copper River is the privilege of having access to the subsistence salmon fishery. I have been told that the Scandinavian people brought fish wheels to Alaska. The fast current in silt laden rivers, turns the paddles of the wheel and the baskets scoop the fish, blinded by the silt in the river, into live or dry baskets depending on where you are. Along the Copper River most people use live boxes. During a strong run of Salmon we can have 50-100 fish in a box at a time. Our little family can use 150-200 salmon throughout the year. Many of our friends use fish to make their own dog food as well, it is not just healthy for two legged beings, it is equally as beneficial for our four legged friends.
